L'arche de Yahweh fut sept mois dans le pays des Philistins.
When the ark of the LORD had been in the land of the Philistines seven months,
Et les Philistins appelèrent les prêtres et les devins et leur dirent : « Que ferons-nous de l'arche de Yahweh ? Faites-nous connaître comment nous devons la renvoyer en son lieu. » Ils répondirent :
the Philistines summoned the priests and diviners, saying, “What shall we do with the ark of the LORD? Tell us how to send it back to its place.”
« Si vous renvoyez l'arche du Dieu d'Israël, ne la renvoyez pas à vide, mais ne manquez pas de lui faire une offrande de réparation ; vous guérirez alors et vous saurez pourquoi sa main ne s'est pas retirée de vous. »
They replied, “If you return the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it away empty, but by all means return it to Him with a guilt offering. Then you will be healed, and you will understand why His hand has not been lifted from you.”
Les Philistins dirent : « Quelle offrande de réparation lui feront-nous ? »
“What guilt offering should we send back to Him?” asked the Philistines. “Five gold tumors and five gold rats,” they said, “according to the number of rulers of the Philistines, since the same plague has struck both you and your rulers.
Ils répondirent : « Cinq tumeurs d'or et cinq souris d'or, selon le nombre des princes des Philistins, car une même plaie a été sur vous et sur vos princes. Faites donc des figures de vos tumeurs et des figures de vos souris qui ravagent le pays, et donnez ainsi gloire au Dieu d'Israël : peut-être cessera-t-il d'appesantir sa main sur vous, sur vos dieux et sur votre pays.
Make images of your tumors and of the rats that are ravaging the land. Give glory to the God of Israel, and perhaps He will lift His hand from you and your gods and your land.
Pourquoi endurciriez-vous votre cœur, comme l'Egypte et Pharaon ont endurci le leur ? N'ont-il pas, lorsqu'il eut exercé ses châtiments sur eux, laissé partir les enfants d'Israël ?
Why harden (note: Or make heavy; similarly again in this verse) your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened theirs? When He afflicted them, did they not send the people out so they could go on their way?
Maintenant donc faites un chariot neuf, et prenez deux vaches qui allaitent et qui n'aient point porté le joug ; attelez les vaches au chariot, et ramenez loin d'elles leurs petits à l'étable.
Now, therefore, prepare one new cart with two milk cows that have never been yoked. Hitch the cows to the cart, but take their calves away and pen them up.
Vous prendrez l'arche de Yahweh et vous la mettrez sur le chariot ; puis, ayant placé à côté d'elle, dans un coffret, les objets d'or que vous aurez donnés en offrande de réparation, vous la renverrez et elle s'en ira.
Take the ark of the LORD, set it on the cart, and in a chest beside it put the gold objects you are sending back to Him as a guilt offering. Then send the ark on its way,
Suivez-la du regard : si elle monte par le chemin de sa frontière, vers Beth-Samès, c'est Yahweh qui nous a fait ce grand mal ; sinon, nous saurons que ce n'est pas sa main qui nous a frappés, et que cela nous est arrivé par hasard. »
but keep watching it. If it goes up the road to its homeland, toward Beth-shemesh, it is the LORD who has brought on us this great disaster. But if it does not, then we will know that it was not His hand that punished us and that it happened by chance.”
Ces gens firent ainsi ; ayant pris deux vaches qui allaitaient, ils les attelèrent au chariot et ils enfermèrent leurs petits dans l'étable.
So the men did as instructed. They took two milk cows, hitched them to the cart, and penned up their calves.
Ils mirent sur le chariot l'arche de Yahweh, et le coffret avec les souris d'or et les figures de leurs tumeurs.
Then they put the ark of the LORD on the cart, along with the chest containing the gold rats and the images of the tumors.
Les vaches prirent tout droit le chemin de Beth-Samès ; elles suivirent toujours la même route en marchant et en mugissant, sans se détourner ni à droite ni à gauche. Les princes des Philistins allèrent derrière elles jusqu'à la frontière de Beth-Samès.
And the cows headed straight up the road toward Beth-shemesh, staying on that one highway and lowing as they went, never straying to the right or to the left. The rulers of the Philistines followed behind them to the border of Beth-shemesh.
Les gens de Beth-Samès étaient à moissonner le blé dans la vallée. Levant les yeux, ils aperçurent l'arche, et se réjouirent en la voyant.
Now the people of Beth-shemesh were harvesting wheat in the valley, and when they looked up and saw the ark, they were overjoyed at the sight.
Le chariot arriva dans le champ de Josué le Bethsamite et s'y arrêta. Il y avait là une grosse pierre. On fendit le bois du chariot et l'on offrit les vaches en holocauste à Yahweh.
The cart came to the field of Joshua of Beth-shemesh and stopped there near a large rock. The people chopped up the cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to the LORD.
Les Lévites, après avoir descendu l'arche de Yahweh, et le coffret qui était auprès, renfermant les objets d'or, posèrent le tout sur la grosse pierre. Les gens de Beth-Samès offrirent en ce jour-là des holocaustes et des sacrifices à Yahweh.
And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD and the chest containing the gold objects, and they placed them on the large rock. That day the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and made sacrifices to the LORD.
Les cinq princes des Philistins, ayant vu cela, retournèrent le même jour à Accaron.
And when the five rulers of the Philistines saw this, they returned to Ekron that same day.
Voici les tumeurs d'or que les Philistins donnèrent à Yahweh en offrande de réparation : une pour Azot, une pour Gaza, une pour Ascalon, une pour Geth, une pour Accaron.
As a guilt offering to the LORD, the Philistines had sent back one gold tumor for each city: Ashdod, Gaza, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron.
Ils offrirent aussi des souris d'or selon le nombre de toutes les villes des Philistins appartenant aux cinq chefs, tant des villes fortifiées que des villages sans murs : témoin la grosse pierre sur laquelle on déposa l'arche de Yahweh, et qui est restée jusqu'à ce jour dans le champ de Josué le Bethsamite.
The number of gold rats also corresponded to the number of Philistine cities belonging to the five rulers—the fortified cities and their outlying villages. And the large rock (note: Or great meadow; Hebrew Abel-haggedolah) on which they placed the ark of the LORD stands to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth-shemesh.
Yahweh frappa les gens de Beth-Samès, parce qu'ils avaient regardé l'arche de Yahweh ; il frappa cinquante mille soixante-dix hommes parmi le peuple. Et le peuple fit un grand deuil de ce que Yahweh avait frappé le peuple d'une grande plaie.
But God struck down some of the people of Beth- (note: A few late Hebrew manuscripts and Josephus; most Hebrew manuscripts 70 men and 50,000 men; LXX 70 men and 50,000 men of the people; Syriac and Arabic 70 men and 5,000 men; alternately, possibly 70 men and 50 oxen)shemesh because they looked inside the ark of the LORD. He struck down seventy men, and the people mourned because the LORD had struck them with a great slaughter.
Les gens de Beth-Samès dirent : « Qui peut subsister en la présence de Yahweh, ce Dieu saint ? Et vers qui va-t-il monter en s'éloignant de nous ? »
The men of Beth-shemesh asked, “Who can stand in the presence of the LORD, this holy God? To whom should the ark go up from here?”
Ils envoyèrent des messagers aux habitants de Cariathiarim, pour leur dire : « Les Philistins ont ramené l'arche de Yahweh ; descendez et faites-la monter vers vous. »
So they sent messengers to the people of Kiriath-jearim, saying, “The Philistines have returned the ark of the LORD. Come down and take it up with you.”
