Καὶ ἐγενήθη ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις καὶ συναθροίζονται ἀλλόφυλοι εἰς πόλεμον ἐπὶ Ἰσραήλ· καὶ ἐξῆλθεν Ἰσραὴλ εἰς ἀπάντησιν αὐτοῖς εἰς πόλεμον, καὶ παρεμβάλλουσιν ἐπὶ Ἀβενέζερ, καὶ οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι παρεμβάλλουσιν ἐν Ἀφέκ.
Thus the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now the Israelites went out to meet the Philistines in battle and camped at Ebenezer, while the Philistines camped at Aphek.
καὶ παρατάσσονται οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι εἰς πόλεμον ἐπὶ Ἰσραήλ· καὶ ἔκλινεν ὁ πόλεμος, καὶ ἔπταισεν ἀνὴρ Ἰσραὴλ ἐνώπιον ἀλλοφύλων , καὶ ἐπλήγησαν ἐν τῇ παρατάξει ἐν ἀγρῷ τέσσαρες χιλιάδες ἀνδρῶν.
The Philistines arrayed themselves against Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who struck down about four thousand men on the battlefield.
καὶ ἦλθεν ὁ λαὸς εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν, καὶ εἶπαν οἱ πρεσβύτεροι Ἰσραήλ κατὰ τί ἔπταισεν ἡμᾶς Κύριος σήμερον ἐνώπιον ἀλλοφύλων ; λάβωμεν τὴν κιβωτὸν τοῦ ἡμῶν ἐκ Σηλώμ, καὶ ἐξελθέτω ἐκ μέσου ἡμῶν καὶ σώσει ὑμᾶς ἐκ θρῶν ἡμῶν.
When the troops returned to the camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why has the LORD brought defeat on us before the Philistines today? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD from Shiloh, so that it may go (note: Or He may go) with us to save us from the hand of our enemies.”
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν ὁ λαὸς εἰς Σηλώμ, καὶ αἴρουσιν ἐκεῖθεν τὴν κιβωτὸν Κυρίου καθημένου χερουβείμ· καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ Ἤλει μετὰ τῆς κιβωτοῦ, Ὁφνεὶ καὶ Φεινεές.
So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the LORD of Hosts, who sits enthroned between the cherubim. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
καὶ ἐγεννήθη κυρίου εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν, καὶ ἀνέκραξεν πᾶς καὶ ἤχησεν ἡ γῆ.
When the ark of the covenant of the LORD entered the camp, all the Israelites raised such a great shout that the ground shook.
καὶ ἤκουσαν οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι τῆς κραυγῆς, καὶ εἶπον οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι τίς ἢ κραυγὴ ἡ μεγάλη αὕτη ἐν παρεμβολὴ τῶν Ἐβραίων ; καὶ ἔγνωσαν ὅτι κιβωτὸς Κυρίου ἥκει εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν.
On hearing the noise of the shout, the Philistines asked, “What is this loud shouting in the camp of the Hebrews?” And when they realized that the ark of the LORD had entered the camp,
καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι καὶ εἶπον οὗτοι οἱ θεοὶ ἥκασιν πρὸς αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν· οὐαὶ ἡμῖν· ἐξελοῦ ἡμᾶς, Κύριε, σήμερον, ὅτι οὐ γέγονεν τοιαύτη ἐχθὲς καὶ τρίτην.
the Philistines were afraid. “The gods have entered (note: Or A god has entered) their camp!” they said. “Woe to us, for nothing like this has happened before.
οὐαὶ ἡμῖν, τίς ἐξελεῖται ἡμᾶς ἐκ χειρὸς τῶν θεῶν τῶν στερεῶν τούτων,. οὗτοι οἱ θεοὶ οἱ πατάξαντες τὴν Αἴγυπτον ἐν πάσῃ πληγῇ καὶ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ.
Woe to us! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness.
κραταιοῦσθε καὶ γίνεσθε εἰς ἄνδρας καὶ πολεμήσατε αὐτούς.
Take courage and be men, O Philistines! Otherwise, you will serve the Hebrews just as they served you. Now be men and fight!”
καὶ ἐπολέμησαν αὐτούς· καὶ πταίει ἀνὴρ καὶ ἔφυγεν ἕκαστος εἰς σκήνωμα αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἐγένετο πληγὴ μεγάλη σφόδρα, καὶ ἔπεσαν ἐξ Ἰσραὴλ τριάκοντα χιλιάδες ταγμάτων.
So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and each man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great—thirty thousand foot soldiers of Israel fell.
καὶ κιβωτὸς θεοῦ ἑλήμφθη, καὶ ἀμφότεροι υἱοὶ Ἠλεὶ ἀπέθανον, Ὁφνεὶ καὶ Φεινεές.
The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.
καὶ ἔδραμεν ἀνὴρ Ἰεμειναὶος ἐκ τῆς παρατάξεως καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς Σηλὼμ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ, καὶ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ διερρηγότα Ἴ’ καὶ γῆ ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ.
That same day a Benjamite ran from the battle line all the way to Shiloh, with his clothes torn and dirt on his head.
καὶ ἦλθεν, καὶ ἰδοὺ Ἤλει ἐπὶ δίφρου παρὰ τὴν πύλην σκοπεύων τὴν ὁδόν, ὅτι ἦν καρδία αὐτοῦ ἐξεστηκυῖα περὶ τῆς κιβωτοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ· καὶ ὁ ἄνθρωπος εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὴν πόλιν ἀπαγγεὶλαι, καὶ ἀνεβόησεν ἡ πόλις.
When he arrived, there was Eli, sitting on his chair beside the road and watching, because his heart trembled for the ark of God. When the man entered the city to give a report, the whole city cried out.
καὶ ἤκουσεν Ἤλει τὴν φωνὴν τῆς βοῆς καὶ εἶπεν τίς ἡ βοὴ τῆς φωνῆς ταύτης; καὶ ὁ ἄνθρωπος σπεύσας εἰσῆλθεν καὶ ἀπήγγειλεν τῷ Ἤλει.
Eli heard the outcry and asked, “Why this commotion?” So the man hurried over and reported to Eli.
καὶ Ηλεὶ υἱὸς ἐνενήκοντα ἐτῶν, καὶ οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ αὐτοῦ ἐπανέστησαν καὶ οὐκ ἔβλεπεν· καὶ εἶπεν Ἠλεὶ τοῖς ἀνδράσιν τοῖς περιεστηκόσιν αὐτῷ τίς ἡ φωνὴ τοῦ ἤχους τούτου ;
Now Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his gaze was fixed because he could not see.
καὶ ὁ ἀνὴρ σπεύσας Ηλεὶ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ἥκων ἐκ τῆς παρεμβολῆς, κἀγὼ πέφευγα ἐκ τῆς παρατάξεως σήμερον. καὶ εἶπεν Τί τὸ γεγονὸς ῥῆμα, τέκνον;
“I have just come from the battle,” the man said to Eli. “I fled from there today.” “What happened, my son?” Eli asked.
καὶ ἀπεκρίθη τὸ παιδάριον καὶ εἶπεν ἀνὴρ Ἰσραὴλ ἐκ προσώπου ἀλλοφύλων, καὶ ἐγένετο πληγὴ μεγάλη ἐν τῷ λαῷ, καὶ ἀμφότεροι οἱ υἱοί σου θεοῦ τεθνήκασιν, καὶ ἡ κιβωτὸς τοῦ θεοῦ ἐλήμφθη.
The messenger answered, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been a great slaughter among the people. Your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are both dead, and the ark of God has been captured.”
καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἐμνήσθη τῆς κιβωτοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ, καὶ ἐπεσεν ἀπὸ τοῦ δίφρου ὀπισθίως ἐχόμενος τῆς πύλης, καὶ συνετρίβη ὁ νῶτος αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπέθανεν, ὅτι πρεσβύτης ὁ ἄνθρωπος καὶ βαρύς· καὶ αὐτὸς ἔκρινεν τὸν Ἰσραὴλ εἴκοσι ἔτη.
As soon as the ark of God was mentioned, Eli fell backward from his chair by the city gate, and being old and heavy, he broke his neck and died. And Eli had judged (note: Or governed or led) Israel forty years.
Καὶ νύμφη αὐτοῦ γυνὴ Φεινεὲς συνειληφυῖα τοῦ τεκεῖν· κοὶ ἤκουσεν τὴν ἀγγελίαν ὅτι ἑλήμφθη ἡ κιβωτὸς τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ ὅ τέθνηκεν ὁ πενθερὸς αὐτῆς καὶ ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς, καὶ ἔκλαυσεν καὶ ἔτεκεν, ὅτι ἐπεστράφησαν ἐπ’ αὐτὴν ὠδῖνες αὐτῆς·
Now Eli’s daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and about to give birth. When she heard the news of the capture of God’s ark and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband, she collapsed and gave birth, for her labor pains overtook her.
καί ἐν τῷ καιρῷ αὐτῆς ἀποθνήσκει. καὶ αὐτῇ αἱ γυναῖκες αἱ παρεστηκυῖαι αὐτῇ αὐτῇ φοβοῦ, ὅτι υἱὸν τέτοκας. καὶ οὐκ ἀπεκρίθη, καὶ οὐκ ἐνόησεν ἡ καρδία αὐτῆς.
As she was dying, the women attending to her said, “Do not be afraid, for you have given birth to a son!” But she did not respond or pay any heed.
κα ἐκάλεσεν τὸ παιδάριον ὦαί βαρχαβώθ, ὑπὲρ τῆ,ς κιβωτοῦ τοῦ δεον καὶ ὑπὲρ τοῦ πενθεροῦ αὐτῆς καὶ ὕπερ του ἀνδρὸς αὐτῆς. κυρίου.
And she named the boy Ichabod (note: Ichabod means no glory.), saying, “The glory has departed (note: Or gone into exile; also in verse 22) from Israel,” because the ark of God had been captured and her father-in-law and her husband had been killed.
