Καὶ ἔρχονται οἱ Ζειφαῖοι ἐκ τῆς αὐχμώδους πρὸς τὸν Σαοὺλ εἰς τὸν βουνὸν λέγοντες ἰδοὺ Δαυεὶδ σκεπάζεται μεθ’ ἡμῶν ἐν τῷ βουνῷ τῶ Χελμὰθ τοῦ κατὰ πρόσωπον τοῦ Ἰεσσαιμού.
Then the Ziphites came to Saul at Gibeah and said, “Is not David hiding on the hill of Hachilah, opposite Jeshimon?”
καὶ ἀνέστη Σαοὺλ καὶ κατέβη εἰς τὴν ἔρημον Ζείφ, καὶ μετ’ αὐτοῦ τρεῖς χιλιάδες ἀνδρῶν ἐκλεκτοὶ ἐξ Ἰσραὴλ, ζητεῖν τὸν Δαυεὶδ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ Ζείφ,
So Saul, accompanied by three thousand chosen men of Israel, went down to the Wilderness of Ziph to search for David there.
καὶ παρενέβαλεν Σαοὺλ ἐν τῷ βουνῷ τοῦ Ἐχέλα ἐπὶ προσώπου τοῦ Ἰεσσαιμοὺ ἐπὶ τῆς ὁδοῦ, καὶ Δαυεὶδ ἐκάθισεν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ· καὶ εἶδεν Δαυεὶδ ὅτι ἥκει Σοοὺλ ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν ἔρημον.
Saul camped beside the road at the hill of Hachilah opposite Jeshimon, but David was living in the wilderness. When he realized that Saul had followed him there,
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Δαυεὶδ κατασκόπους, καὶ ἔγνω ὅτι ἥκει Σαοὺλ ἕτοιμος ἐκ Κεειλά.
David sent out spies to verify that Saul had arrived.
καὶ ἀνέστη Δαυεὶδ λάθρα καὶ εἰσπορεύεται εἰς τὸν τόπον οὗ ἐκάθευδεν ἐκεῖ Σαούλ, καὶ ἐκεῖ Ἀβεννὴρ υἱὸς Νὴρ αὐτοῦ. καὶ Σαοὺλ ἐκάθευδεν ἐν λαμπήνῃ, καὶ ὁ λαὸς κύκλῳ αὐτοῦ.
Then David set out and went to the place where Saul had camped. He saw the place where Saul and Abner son of Ner, the general of his army, had lain down. Saul was lying inside the inner circle of the camp, with the troops camped around him.
καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Δαυεὶδ καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς Χετταῖον καὶ πρὸς Ἀβεσσὰ υἱὸν Σαρουίας ἀδελφὸν Ἰωὰβ λέγων Τίς εἰσελεύσεται μετ’ ἐμοῦ πρὸς Σαοὺλ εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν ; καὶ εἶπεν Ἀβεισά Ἐγὼ εἰσελεύσομαι μετὰ σοῦ.
And David asked Ahimelech the Hittite and Abishai son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, “Who will go down with me to Saul in the camp?” “I will go with you,” answered Abishai.
καὶ εἰσπορεύεται Δαυεὶδ καὶ Ἀβεισὰ εἰς τὸν λαὸν τὴν νύκτα, καὶ ἰδοὺ Σαοὺλ καθεύδων ὕπνῳ ἐν λαμπήνῃ, καὶ τὸ δόρυ αὐτοῦ ἐνπεπηγὸς εἰς τὴν γῆν πρὸς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ, καὶ Ἀβεννὴρ καὶ ὁ λαὸς αὐτοῦ ἐκάθευδεν κύκλῳ αὐτοῦ.
That night David and Abishai came to the troops, and Saul was lying there asleep in the inner circle of the camp, with his spear stuck in the ground by his head. And Abner and the troops were lying around him.
κα εἶπεν Ἀβεισὰ πρὸς Δαυείδ Ἀπέκλεισεν σήμερον Κύριος τὸν ἐχθρόν σου εἰς τὰς χεῖράς σου. καὶ νῦν πατάξω αὐτὸν τῷ δόρατι εἰς τὴν γῆν ἅπαξ, καὶ οὐ δευτερώσω αὐτῷ.
Abishai said to David, “Today God has delivered your enemy into your hand. Now, therefore, please let me thrust the spear through him into the ground with one stroke. I will not need to strike him twice!”
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς Ἀβεισά Μὴ ταπεινώσῃς αὐτόν, ὅτι τίς ἐποίσει χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ χριστὸν κυρίου καὶ ἀθῳωθήσεται ;
But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him, for who can extend a hand against the LORD’s anointed and be guiltless?”
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυείδ νῇ Κύριος, ἐὰν μὴ κύριος παιδεύσῃ αὐτόν, ἢ ἡ ἡμέρα αὐτοῦ ἔλθῃ καὶ ἀποθάνῃ, ἢ εἰς πόλεμον καταβῇ προστεθῇ·
David added, “As surely as the LORD lives, the LORD Himself will strike him down; either his day will come and he will die, or he will go into battle and perish.
μηδαμῶς μοι παρὰ κυρίου ἐπενεγκεῖν χεῖρά μου ἐπὶ χριστὸν κυρίου. καὶ νῦν λάβε δὴ τὸ δόρυ ἀπὸ πρὸς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ καὶ τὸν φακὸν τοῦ ὕδατος, καὶ ἀπέλθωμεν καθ’ ἑαυτούς.
But the LORD forbid that I should extend my hand against the LORD’s anointed. Instead, take the spear and water jug by his head, and let us go.”
καὶ ἔλαβεν Δαυεὶδ τὸ δόρυ καὶ τὸν φακὸν τοῦ ὕδατος ἀπὸ κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀπῆλθον καθ’ ἑαυτούς· καὶ οὐκ ἦν ὁ καὶ οὐκ ἦν ὁ γινώσκων, καὶ οὐκ ἦν ὁ ἐξεγειρόμενος· πάντες ὒ ὅτι θάμβος κυρίου ἔπεσεν ἐπ’ αὐτούς.
So David took the spear and water jug by Saul’s head, and they departed. No one saw them or knew about it, nor did anyone wake up; they all remained asleep, because a deep sleep from the LORD had fallen on them.
καὶ διέβη Δαυεὶδ εἰς τὸ πέραν καὶ ἵστη ἐπὶ τὴν κορυφὴν τοῦ ὄρους μακρόθεν, καὶ πολλὴ ἡ ὁδὸς ἀνὰ μέσον αὐτῶν.
Then David crossed to the other side and stood atop the mountain at a distance; there was a wide gulf between them.
καὶ προσεκαλέσατο Δαυεὶδ τὸν λαόν, καὶ τῷ Ἀβεννὴρ ἐλάλησεν λέγων Οὐκ ἀποκριθήσει, Ἀβεννήρ ; καὶ εἶπεν τίς εἶ σὺ ὁ καλῶν ;
And David shouted to the troops and to Abner son of Ner, “Will you not answer me, Abner?” “Who are you who calls to the king?” Abner replied.
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς Ἀβεννήρ οὐκ ἀνὴρ σύ ; καὶ τίς ὡς σὺ ἐν Ἰσραήλ ; καὶ διὰ τί οὐ φυλάσσεις τὸν κύριόν σου τὸν βασιλέα ; ὅτι εἰσῆλθεν εἷς ἑκ τοῦ λαοῦ διαφθεῖραι τὸν βασιλέα κύριόν σου.
So David said to Abner, “You are a man, aren’t you? And who in Israel is your equal? Why then did you not protect your lord the king when one of the people came to destroy him?
καὶ οὐκ ἀγαθὸν τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο ὃ πεποίηκας· ζῆ Κύριος, ὅτι υἱοὶ θανατώσεως ὑμεῖς οἱ φυλάσσοντες τὸν βασιλέα κύριον ὑμῶν τὸν χριστὸν κυρίου· καὶ νῦν ἴδε δὴ τὸ δόρυ τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ ὁ φακὸς τοῦ ὕδατος, ποῦ ἐστιν τὰ πρὸς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ.
This thing you have done is not good. As surely as the LORD lives, all of you deserve to die, since you did not protect your lord, the LORD’s anointed. Now look around. Where are the king’s spear and water jug that were by his head?”
καὶ ἐπέγνω Σαοὺλ τὴν φωνὴν τοῦ Δαυεὶδ καὶ εἶπεν Ἡ φωνή σου, τέκνον, αὕτη, Δαυείδ ; καὶ εἶπεν Δαυείδ Δοῦλός σου, κύριε βασιλεῦ.
Then Saul recognized David’s voice and asked, “Is that your voice, David my son?” “It is my voice, my lord and king,” David said.
καὶ εἶπεν Ἵνα τί τοῦτο καταδιώκει ὁ κύριος ὀπίσω τοῦ δούλου αὐτοῦ; ὅτι τί ἡμάρτηκα, καὶ τί εὑρέθη ἐν ἐμοὶ ἀδίκημα ;
And he continued, “Why is my lord pursuing his servant? What have I done? What evil is in my hand?
καὶ νῦν ἀκουσάτω ὁ κύριός μου ὁ βασιλεὺς τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦ δούλου αὐτοῦ· εἰ ὁ θεὸς ἐπισείει σε ἐπ’ ἐμέ, ὀσφρανθείη θυσίας σου· καὶ εἰ υἱοὶ ἀνθρώπων, ἑπικατάρατοι οὗτοι ἐνώπιον Κυρίου, ὅτι ἐξέβαλόν με σήμερον μὴ ἐστηρίσθαι ἐν κληρονομίᾳ κυρίου, λέγοντες Πορεύου, δούλευε θεοῖς ἑτέροις.
Now please, may my lord the king hear the words of his servant: If the LORD has stirred you up against me, then may He accept an offering. But if men have done it, may they be cursed in the presence of the LORD! For today they have driven me away from sharing in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods.’
καὶ νῦν μὴ πέσοι τὸ αἷμά μου ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ἐξ ἐναντίας προσώπου κυρίου· ὅτι ἐξελήλυθεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἰσραὴλ ζητεῖν ψυχήν μου, καθὼς καταδιώκει ὁ νυκτικόραξ ἐν τοῖς ὄρεσιν.
So do not let my blood fall to the ground far from the presence of the LORD. For the king of Israel has come out to look for a flea, like one who hunts a partridge in the mountains.”
καὶ εἶπεν Σαούλ Ἡμάρτηκα· ἐπίστρεφε, τέκνον Δαυείδ· ὅτι οὐ κακοποιήσω σε, ἀνθ’ ὧν ἔντιμος ψυχή μου ἐν ὀφθαλμοις σου. καὶ ἐν· τῆ̣ σήμερον μεματαίωμαι καὶ ἠγνόηκα πολλὰ σφόδρα.
Then Saul replied, “I have sinned. Come back, David my son. I will never harm you again, because today you considered my life precious. I have played the fool and have committed a grave error!”
καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Δαυεὶδ καὶ εἶπεν ἰδοὺ τὸ δόρυ τοῦ βασιλέως, διελθέτω εἷς τῶν παιδαρίων καὶ λαβέτω αὐτό.
“Here is the king’s spear,” David answered. “Let one of the young men come over and get it.
καὶ κύριος ἐπιστρέψει ἑκάστῳ τὰς δικαιοσύνας αὐτοῦ καὶ τήν πίστιν αὐτοῦ· ὡς παρέδωκέν σε κύριος εἰς χεῖράς μου, καὶ οὐκ ἠθέλησ’ ἐπενεγκεῖν χεῖρά ἐ κυρίου.
May the LORD repay every man for his righteousness and faithfulness. For the LORD delivered you into my hand today, but I would not extend my hand against the LORD’s anointed.
καὶ ἰδοὺ καθὼς ἐμεγαλύνθη ἡ ψυχὴ σου σήμερον ἐν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς μου, οὕτως μεγαλυνθείη ἡ ψυχή μου, οὕτως μεγαλυνθείη ἡ ψυχή μου ἐνώπιον κυρίου, καὶ σκεπάσαι με· καὶ ἐξελεῖταί με ἐκ πάσης θλίψεως.
As surely as I valued your life today, so may the LORD value my life and rescue me from all trouble.”
καὶ εἶπεν Σαοὺλ πρὸς Δαυείδ Εὐλογημένος σύ, τέκνον, καὶ ποιῶν καὶ δυνάμενος δυνήσει. καὶ ἀπῆλθεν Δαυεὶδ εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτοῦ, Σαοὺλ ἀνέστρεψεν εἰς τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτοῦ.
Saul said to him, “May you be blessed, David my son. You will accomplish great things and will surely prevail.” So David went on his way, and Saul returned home.
