Yahweh dit à Samuel : « Jusques à quand pleureras-tu sur Saül, alors que je l'ai rejeté, afin qu'il ne règne plus sur Israël ? Remplis ta corne d'huile et va ; je t'envoie chez Isaï de Béthléem, car j'ai vu parmi ses fils le roi que je veux. »
Now the LORD said to Samuel, “How long are you going to mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem, for I have selected from his sons a king for Myself.”
Samuel dit : « Comment irais-je ? Saül l'apprendra, et il me tuera. » Et Yahweh dit : « Tu prendras avec toi une génisse, et tu diras : C'est pour offrir un sacrifice à Yahweh que je suis venu.
“How can I go?” Samuel asked. “Saul will hear of it and kill me!” The LORD answered, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.’
Tu inviteras Isaï au sacrifice, et je te ferai connaître ce que tu auras à faire, et tu oindras pour moi celui que je te désignerai. »
Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you are to do. You are to anoint for Me the one I indicate.”
Samuel fit ce que Yahweh avait dit, et il se rendit à Bethléem. Les anciens de la ville vinrent inquiets au-devant de lui et dirent : « Ton arrivée est-elle pour la paix ? »
So Samuel did what the LORD had said and went to Bethlehem. When the elders of the town met him, they trembled and asked, “Do you come in peace?”
Il répondit : « Pour la paix ! Je viens pour offrir un sacrifice à Yahweh. Sanctifiez-vous et venez avec moi au sacrifice. » Et il sanctifia Isaï et ses fils et les invita au sacrifice.
“In peace,” he replied. “I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
Lorsqu'ils furent entrés, Samuel aperçut Eliab et dit : « Certainement l'oint de Yahweh est devant lui. »
When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and said, “Surely here before the LORD is His anointed.”
Et Yahweh dit à Samuel : « Ne prends pas garde à sa figure et à la hauteur de sa taille, car je l'ai écarté. Il ne s'agit pas de ce que l'homme voit ; l'homme regarde le visage, mais Yahweh regarde le cœur. »
But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or height, for I have rejected him; the LORD does not see as man does. For man sees the outward appearance, but the LORD sees the heart.”
Isaï appela Abinadab et le fit passer devant Samuel ; et Samuel dit : « Ce n'est pas encore celui-ci que Yahweh a choisi. »
Then Jesse called Abinadab and presented him to Samuel, who said, “The LORD has not chosen this one either.”
Isaï fit passer Samma ; et Samuel dit : « Ce n'est pas encore celui-ci que Yahweh a choisi. »
Next Jesse presented Shammah (note: Shammah is a variant of Shimeah, Shimea, and Shimei; see 2 Samuel 13:3, 2 Samuel 21:21, and 1 Chronicles 2:13.), but Samuel said, “The LORD has not chosen this one either.”
Isaï fit passer ses sept fils devant Samuel ; et Samuel dit à Isaï : « Yahweh n'a choisi aucun de ceux-ci. »
Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel told him, “The LORD has not chosen any of these.”
Alors Samuel dit à Isaï : « Sont-ce là tous les jeunes gens ? » Il répondit : « Il y a encore le plus jeune, et voilà qu'il fait paître les brebis. » Samuel dit à Isaï : « Envoie-le chercher, car nous ne nous mettrons point à table qu'il ne soit venu ici. »
And Samuel asked him, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse replied, “but he is tending the sheep.” “Send for him,” Samuel replied. “For we will not sit down to eat until he arrives.”
Isaï l'envoya chercher. Or il était blond, avec de beaux yeux et une belle figure. Yahweh dit : « Lève-toi, oins-le, car c'est lui ! »
So Jesse sent for his youngest son and brought him in. He was ruddy, with beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance. And the LORD said, “Rise and anoint him, for he is the one.”
Samuel, ayant pris la corne d'huile, l'oignit au milieu de ses frères, et l'Esprit de Yahweh fondit sur David à partir de ce jour et dans la suite. Samuel se leva et s'en alla à Ramatha.
So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David from that day forward. Then Samuel set out and went to Ramah.
L'Esprit de Yahweh se retira de Saül, et un mauvais esprit venu de Yahweh fondit sur lui.
Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and a spirit of distress (note: Or a harmful spirit; similarly in verses 15, 16, and 23) from the LORD began to torment him.
Les serviteurs de Saül lui dirent : « Voici qu'un mauvais esprit de Dieu fond sur toi.
Saul’s servants said to him, “Surely a spirit of distress from God is tormenting you.
Que notre seigneur parle ; tes serviteurs sont devant toi, ils chercheront un homme sachant jouer de la harpe, et, quand le mauvais esprit venu de Dieu sera sur toi, il jouera de sa main, et tu seras soulagé. »
Let our lord command your servants here to seek out someone who can skillfully play the harp. Whenever the spirit of distress from God is upon you, he is to play it, and you will be well.”
Saül répondit à ses serviteurs : « Trouvez-moi donc un homme habile à jouer, et amenez-le-moi. »
And Saul commanded his servants, “Find me someone who plays well, and bring him to me.”
L'un des serviteurs, prenant la parole, dit : « J'ai vu un fils d'Isaï de Bethléem, qui sait jouer ; il est fort et vaillant guerrier, parlant bien ; c'est un homme de belle figure, et Yahweh est sur lui. »
One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the harp. He is a mighty man of valor, a warrior, eloquent and handsome, and the LORD is with him.”
Saül envoya des messagers à Isaï, pour lui dire : « Envoie-moi David, ton fils, qui est avec les brebis. »
So Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.”
Isaï prit un âne, avec du pain, une outre de vin et un chevreau, et les envoya à Saül par David, son fils.
And Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine, and one young goat and sent them to Saul with his son David.
Arrivé chez Saül, David se tint devant lui ; et Saül le prit en affection, et il devint son écuyer.
When David came to Saul and entered his service, Saul loved him very much, and David became his armor-bearer.
Et Saül envoya dire à Isaï : « Que David, je te prie, reste devant moi, car il a trouvé grâce à mes yeux. »
Then Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, “Let David remain in my service, for I am pleased with him.”
Lorsque l'esprit venu de Dieu était sur Saül, David prenait la harpe et jouait de sa main, et Saül se calmait et se trouvait bien, et le mauvais esprit se retirait de lui.
And whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul, David would pick up his harp and play. Then Saul would find relief and feel better, and the spirit of distress would depart from him.
