Καὶ ἐκλέγεται Σαοὺλ ἑαυτῷ τρεῖς χιλιάδας ἀνδρῶν ἐκ τῶν ἀνδρῶν Ἰσραήλ· καὶ ἦσαν μετὰ Σαοὺλ δισχίλιοι ἐν Μαχεμὰς καὶ ἐν τῷ ὄρει Βαιθήλ, χίλιοι ἦσαν μετὰ Ἰωναθὰν ἐν Γαβεὲ τοῦ Βενιαμείν· καὶ τὸ κατάλοιπον τοῦ λαοῦ ἐξαπέστειλεν ἕκαστον εἰς τὸ σκηνωμα αὐτοῦ.
He chose for himself three thousand men of Israel: Two thousand were with Saul at Michmash and in the hill country of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin. And the rest of the troops he sent away, each to his own home.
καὶ ἐπάταξεν Ἰωναθὰν τὸν Νασεὶβ τὸν ἀλλόφυλον τὸν ἐν τῷ βουνῷ, καὶ ἀκούουσιν οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι· καὶ Σαοὺλ σάλπιγγι σαλπίζει εἰς πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν λέγων Ἠθετήκασιν οἱ δοῦλοι.
Then Jonathan attacked the Philistine outpost at Geba, and the Philistines heard about it. So Saul blew the ram’s horn throughout the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear!”
καὶ πᾶς Ἰσραὴλ ἤκουσεν λεγόντων Πέπαικεν Σαοὺλ τὸν Νοσεὶβ τὸν ἀλλόφυλον, καὶ ᾐσχύνθησαν Ἰσραὴλ ἐν τοῖς ἀλλοφύλοις· καὶ ἀνέβησαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραὴλ ὀπίσω Σαοὺλ ἐν Γαλγάλοις.
And all Israel heard the news: “Saul has attacked an outpost of the Philistines, and now Israel has become a stench to the Philistines!” Then the people were summoned to join Saul at Gilgal.
καὶ συνάγονται εἰς πόλεμον ἐπὶ Ἰσραήλ, κα τριάκοντα χιλιάδες ἁρμάτων καὶ ἐξ χιλιάδες ἱππέων κα λαὸς ὡς ἡ ἄμμος ἢ παρὰ τὴν θάλασσαν τῷ πλήθει. καὶ ἀναβαίνουσιν καὶ παρεμβάλλουσιν ἐν Μαχεμὰς ἐξ ἐναντίας Βαιθωρὼν κατὰ νώτου·
Now the Philistines assembled to fight against Israel with three thousand (note: Some LXX manuscripts and Syriac; Hebrew thirty thousand) chariots, six thousand horsemen, and troops as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They went up and camped at Michmash, east of Beth-aven.
καὶ ἀνὴρ Ἰσραὴλ εἶδεν ὅτι στενῶς αὐτῷ μὴ προσάγειν αὐτόν, καὶ ὁ λαὸς ἐν τοῖς σπηλαίοις καὶ ἐν ταῖς μάνδραις καὶ ἐν ταῖς πέτραις καὶ ἐν τοῖς βόθροις τοῖς λάκκοις.
Seeing that they were in danger because their troops were hard-pressed, the men of Israel hid in caves and thickets, among the rocks, and in cellars and cisterns.
καὶ οἱ διαβαίνοντες διέβησαν τὸν Ἰορδάνην εἰς γῆν Γὰδ καὶ Γαλαάδ· καὶ Σαοὺλ ἔτι ἢν ἐν Γαλγάλοις, καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ἐξέστη ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ.
Some Hebrews even crossed the Jordan into the land of Gad and Gilead. Saul, however, remained at Gilgal, and all his troops were quaking in fear.
Καὶ ἑπτὰ ἡμέρας τῷ μαρτυρίῳ, ὡς εἶπεν Σαμουήλ· κα οὐ Σαμουὴλ εἰς Γάλγαλα, καὶ διεσπάρη ὁ λαὸς αὐτοῦ ἀπ’
And Saul waited seven days for the time appointed by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the troops began to desert Saul.
καὶ εἶπεν Σαούλ Προσαγάγετε ὅπως ποιήσω ὁλοκαύτωσιν καὶ αἰ ἀνήνεγκεν τὴν ὁλοκαύτωσιν
So he said, “Bring me the burnt offering and the peace offerings.” And he offered up the burnt offering.
καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς συνετεἀναφέρων τὴν ὁλοκαύτωσιν, καὶ Σαμουὴλ παραγίνεται· καὶ ἐξῆλθεν Σαοὺλ εἰς ἀπάντησιν αὐτῷ εὐλογῆσαι αὐτόν.
Just as he finished offering the burnt offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to greet him.
καὶ εἶπεν Σαμουήλ Τί πεποίηκας ; καὶ εἶπεν Σαούλ Ὅτι εἶδον ὡς διεσπάρη ὁ λαὸς ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ, καὶ σύ οὐ παρεγένου ὡς διετάξω ἐν τῷ μαρτυρίῳ τῶν ἡμερῶν, καὶ οἱἀλλόφυλοι συνήχθησαν εἰς Μαχεμάς,
“What have you done?” Samuel asked. And Saul replied, “When I saw that the troops were deserting me, and that you did not come at the appointed time and the Philistines were gathering at Michmash,
καὶ εἶπα Νῦν καταβήσονται οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι πρὸς μὲ εἰς Γάλγαλα, κοὶ τοῦ προσώπου τοῦ κυρίου οὐκ ἐδεήθην· καὶ ἐνεκρατευσάμην καὶ ἀνήνεγκα τὴν ὁλοκαύτωσιν.
I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will descend upon me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the favor of the LORD.’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering.”
καὶ εἶπεν Σαμουὴλ πρὸς Σαούλ Μεματαίωταί σοι, ὅτι οὐκ ἐφύλαξας τὴν ἐντολήν μου ἢν ἐνετείλατό σοι κύριος· ὡς νῦν ἡτοίμασεν Κύριος τὴν βασιλείαν σου ἕως αἰῶνος ἐπὶ Ἰσραήλ.
“You have acted foolishly,” Samuel declared. “You have not kept the command that the LORD your God gave you; if you had, the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.
καὶ νῦν ἡ βασιλεία σου οὐ στήσεται, καὶ ζητήσει κύριος ἑαυτῷ ἄνθρωπον κατὰ τὴν καρδίαν αὐτοῦ, κα ἐντελεῖται Κύριος αὐτῷ εἰς ἄρχοντα ἐπὶ τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ, ὅτι οὐκ ἐφύλαξας ὅ τι ἐνετείλατό σοι κύριος.
But now your kingdom will not endure; the LORD has sought a man after His own heart and appointed him ruler over His people, because you have not kept the command of the LORD.”
Καὶ καὶ ἀπῆλθεν ἐκ Γαλγάλων εἰς ὁδὸν αὐτοῦ· καὶ τὸ τοῦ λαοῦ ἀνέβη ὀπίσω Σαοὺλ εἰς ἀπάντησιν ὀπίσω τοῦ λαοῦ τοῦ πολεμιστοῦ. αὐτῶν παραγενομένων ἐκ Γαλγάλων εἰς Γαβαὰ Βενιαμείν, καὶ ἐπεσκέψατο Σαοὺλ τὸν λαὸν τὸν εὑρεθέντα μετ’ αὐτοῦ ὡς ἑξακοσίους ἄνδρας.
Then Samuel set out from Gilgal and went up to Gibeah in Benjamin (note: LXX Then Samuel set out, and the rest of the people went up after Saul to meet the army; they went up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin.). And Saul numbered the troops who were with him, about six hundred men.
καὶ Σαοὺλ καὶ Ἰωναθάν υἱὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ ὁ λαὸς καὶ οἱ εὑρεθέντες μετ’ αὐτῶν ἐκάθισαν ἐν Γαβεὲ Βενιαμεὶν καὶ ἔκλαιον, καὶ οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι παρεμβεβλήκεισαν εἰς Μαχεμάς.
Now Saul and Jonathan his son and the troops with them were staying in Geba of Benjamin, while the Philistines camped at Michmash.
καὶ ἐφῆλθεν διαφθείρων ἐξ ἀγροῦ ἀλλοφύλων τρισὶν μία ἐπιβλέπουσα ὁδὸν Γοφερὰ ἐπὶ τὴν Σωγάλ,
And raiders went out of the Philistine camp in three divisions. One headed toward Ophrah in the land of Shual,
καὶ ἡ μία ἀρχὴ ἐπιβλέπουσα ὁδὸν Βαιθωρών, καὶ ἡ ἀρχὴ ἡ μία ἐπιβλέπουσα ὁδὸν Γαβεὲ τὴν εἰσκύπτουσαν ἐπὶ Γαῖ τὴν Σαμείν.
another toward Beth-horon, and the third down the border road overlooking the Valley of Zeboim facing the wilderness.
καὶ τέκτων σιδήρου οὐχ εὑρίσκετο ἐν πάσῃ γῇ Ἰσραήλ, ὅτι εἶπον οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι Μὴ ποιήσωσιν οἱ Ἑβραῖοι ῥομφαίαν καὶ δόρυ.
And no blacksmith could be found in all the land of Israel, because the Philistines had said, “The Hebrews must not be allowed to make swords or spears.”
καὶ κατέβαινον πᾶς Ἰσραὴλ εἰς γῆν ἀλλοφύλων χαλκεύειν ἕκαστος τὸ θέριστρον αὐτοῦ κα τὸ σκεῦος, καὶ ἕκαστος τὴν ἀξίνην αὐτοῦ καὶ τὸ δρέπανον αὐτοῦ.
Instead, all the Israelites would go down to the Philistines to sharpen their plowshares, mattocks, axes, and sickles (note: LXX; Hebrew and plowshares; (so plowshare appears twice in the Hebrew).).
καὶ ἦν ὁ τρύγητός ἕτοιμος τοῦ θερίζειν· τὰ δὲ σκεύη ἦν τρεῖς σίκλοι εἰς τὸν ὀδόντα, καὶ τῇ ἀξίνῃ καὶ τῷ δρεπάνῳ ὑπόστασις ἦν ἡ αὐτή. καὶ ἐγενήθη ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις τοῦ πολέμου Μαχεμάς, καὶ οὐχ εὑρέθη ῥομφαία καὶ δόρυ ἐν χειρὶ παντὸς τοῦ λαοῦ τοῦ μετὰ Σαοὺλ καὶ μετὰ Ἰωναθάν, καὶ εὑρέθη τῷ Σαοὺλ καὶ τῶ Ἰωναθὰν υἱῷ αὐτοῦ. καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἐξ ὑποστάσεως τῶν ἀλλοφύλων τὴν ἐν τῷ πέραν Μαχεμάς· καὶ τῷ πατρὶ αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἀπήγγειλεν.
The charge was a pim (note: A pim possibly refers to a polished stone weighing approximately 0.25 ounces or 7 grams found in excavations. This is equivalent to about two-thirds of a shekel and likely refers to the price charged by the Philistines for the services listed.) for sharpening a plowshare or mattock, a third of a shekel for sharpening a pitchfork or an axe, and a third of a shekel for repointing an oxgoad (note: Hebrew does not include the currency unit of a shekel charged for sharpening a pitchfork, an axe, or an oxgoad; alternatively, possibly a third of a pim for each.).
