Und über eine lange Zeit kam das Wort des HErrn zu Elia, im dritten Jahr, und sprach: Gehe hin und zeige dich Ahab, dass ich regnen lasse auf Erden.
After a long time, in the third year of the drought, the word of the LORD came to Elijah: “Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain upon the face of the earth.”
Und Elia ging hin, dass er sich Ahab zeigte. Es war aber eine große Teuerung zu Samaria.
So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab. The famine was severe in Samaria,
Und Ahab rief Obadja, seinen Hofmeister. (Obadja aber fürchtete den HErrn sehr.
and Ahab summoned Obadiah, who was in charge of the palace. (Now Obadiah greatly feared the LORD,
Denn da Isebel die Propheten des HErrn ausrottete, nahm Obadja hundert Propheten und versteckte sie in Höhlen, hier fünfzig und da fünfzig, und versorgte sie mit Brot und Wasser.)
for when Jezebel had slaughtered the prophets of the LORD, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them, fifty men per cave, providing them with food and water.)
So sprach nun Ahab zu Obadja: Zieh durchs Land zu allen Wasserbrunnen und Bächen, ob wir möchten Heu finden und die Rosse und Maultiere erhalten, dass nicht das Vieh alles umkomme.
Then Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go throughout the land to every spring and every valley. Perhaps we will find grass to keep the horses and mules alive so that we will not have to destroy any livestock.”
Und sie teilten sich ins Land, dass sie es durchzogen. Ahab zog allein auf einem Wege und Obadja auch allein den andern Weg.
So they divided the land to explore. Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went the other way by himself.
Da nun Obadja auf dem Wege war, siehe, da begegnete ihm Elia; und er erkannte ihn, fiel auf sein Antlitz und sprach: Bist du nicht mein Herr Elia?
Now as Obadiah went on his way, Elijah suddenly met him. When Obadiah recognized him, he fell facedown and said, “Is it you, my lord Elijah?”
Er sprach: Ja. Gehe hin und sage deinem Herrn: Siehe, Elia ist hier!
“It is I,” he answered. “Go tell your master, ‘Elijah is here!’”
Er aber sprach: Was habe ich gesündigt, dass du deinen Knecht willst in die Hände Ahabs geben, dass er mich töte?
But Obadiah replied, “How have I sinned, that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to put me to death?
So wahr der HErr, dein Gott, lebt, es ist kein Volk noch Königreich, dahin mein Herr nicht gesandt hat, dich zu suchen; und wenn sie sprachen: Er ist nicht hier, nahm er einen Eid von dem Königreich und Volk, dass man dich nicht gefunden hätte.
As surely as the LORD your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent someone to search for you. When they said, ‘He is not here,’ he made that kingdom or nation swear that they had not found you.
Und du sprichst nun: Gehe hin, sage deinem Herrn: Siehe, Elia ist hier!
And now you say, ‘Go tell your master that Elijah is here!’
Wenn ich nun hinginge von dir, so würde dich der Geist des HErrn wegnehmen, weiß nicht, wohin; und wenn ich dann käme und sagte es Ahab an und er fände dich nicht, so erwürgte er mich. Aber dein Knecht fürchtet den HErrn von seiner Jugend auf.
I do not know where the Spirit of the LORD may carry you off when I leave you. Then when I go and tell Ahab and he does not find you, he will kill me. But I, your servant, have feared the LORD from my youth.
Ist's meinem Herrn nicht angesagt, was ich getan habe, da Isebel die Propheten des HErr erwürgte? dass ich der Propheten des HErrn hundert versteckte, hier fünfzig und da fünfzig, in Höhlen und versorgte sie mit Brot und Wasser?
Was it not reported to my lord what I did when Jezebel slaughtered the prophets of the LORD? I hid a hundred prophets of the LORD, fifty men per cave, and I provided them with food and water.
Und du sprichst nun: Gehe hin, sage deinem Herrn: Elia ist hier! dass er mich erwürge.
And now you say, ‘Go tell your lord that Elijah is here!’ He will kill me!”
Elia sprach: So wahr der HErr Zebaoth lebt, vor dem ich stehe, ich will mich ihm heute zeigen.
Then Elijah said, “As surely as the LORD of Hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will present myself to Ahab today.”
Da ging Obadja hin Ahab entgegen und sagte es ihm an. Und Ahab ging hin Elia entgegen.
So Obadiah went to inform Ahab, who went to meet Elijah.
Und da Ahab Elia sah, sprach Ahab zu ihm: Bist du, der Israel verwirrt?
When Ahab saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, O troubler of Israel?”
Er aber sprach: Ich verwirre Israel nicht, sondern Du und deines Vaters Haus, damit dass ihr des HErrn Gebote verlassen habt und wandelt Baalim nach.
“I have not troubled Israel,” Elijah replied, “but you and your father’s house have, for you have forsaken the commandments of the LORD and have followed the Baals.
Wohlan, so sende nun hin und versammle zu mir das ganze Israel auf den Berg Karmel und die vierhundertfünfzig Propheten Baals, auch die vierhundert Propheten der Aschera, die vom Tisch Isebels essen.
Now summon all Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel, along with the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah who eat at Jezebel’s table.”
Also sandte Ahab hin unter alle Kinder Israel und versammelte die Propheten auf den Berg Karmel.
So Ahab summoned all the Israelites and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.
Da trat Elia zu allem Volk und sprach: Wie lange hinkt ihr auf beide Seiten? Ist der HErr Gott, so wandelt ihm nach; ist's aber Baal, so wandelt ihm nach. Und das Volk antwortete ihm nichts.
Then Elijah approached all the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him. But if Baal is God, follow him.” But the people did not answer a word.
Da sprach Elia zum Volk: Ich bin allein übriggeblieben als Prophet des HErrn; aber der Propheten Baals sind vierhundertfünfzig Mann.
Then Elijah said to the people, “I am the only remaining prophet of the LORD, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.
So gebt uns zwei Farren und lasst sie erwählen einen Farren und ihn zerstücken und aufs Holz legen und kein Feuer daran legen; so will ich den andern Farren nehmen und aufs Holz legen und auch kein Feuer daran legen.
Get two bulls for us. Let the prophets of Baal choose one bull for themselves, cut it into pieces, and place it on the wood but not light the fire. And I will prepare the other bull and place it on the wood but not light the fire.
So rufet ihr an den Namen eures Gottes, und ich will den Namen des HErrn anrufen. Welcher Gott nun mit Feuer antworten wird, der sei Gott. Und das ganze Volk antwortete und sprach: Das ist recht.
Then you may call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The God who answers by fire, He is God.” And all the people answered, “What you say is good.”
Und Elia sprach zu den Propheten Baals: Erwählt ihr einen Farren und richtet zu am ersten, denn euer ist viel; und ruft eures Gottes Namen an und legt kein Feuer daran.
Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Since you are so numerous, choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first. Then call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.”
Und sie nahmen den Farren, den man ihnen gab, und richteten zu und riefen an den Namen Baals vom Morgen bis an den Mittag und sprachen: Baal, erhöre uns! Aber es war da keine Stimme noch Antwort. Und sie hinkten um den Altar, den sie gemacht hatten.
And they took the bull that was given them, prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, shouting, “O Baal, answer us!” But there was no sound, and no one answered as they leaped around the altar they had made.
Da es nun Mittag ward, spottete ihrer Elia und sprach: Ruft laut! denn er ist ein Gott; er dichtet oder hat zu schaffen oder ist über Feld oder schläft vielleicht, dass er aufwache.
At noon Elijah began to taunt them, saying, “Shout louder, for he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or occupied, or on a journey. Perhaps he is sleeping and must be awakened!”
Und sie riefen laut und ritzten sich mit Messern und Pfriemen nach ihrer Weise, bis dass ihr Blut herabfloß.
So they shouted louder and cut themselves with knives and lances, as was their custom, until the blood gushed over them.
Da aber Mittag vergangen war, weissagten sie bis um die Zeit, da man Speisopfer tun sollte; und da war keine Stimme noch Antwort noch Aufmerken.
Midday passed, and they kept on raving until the time of the evening sacrifice. But there was no response; no one answered, no one paid attention.
Da sprach Elia zu allem Volk: Kommt her, alles Volk zu mir! Und da alles Volk zu ihm trat, baute er den Altar des HErrn wieder auf, der zerbrochen war,
Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” So all the people approached him, and he repaired the altar of the LORD that had been torn down.
und nahm zwölf Steine nach der Zahl der Stämme der Kinder Jakobs (zu welchem das Wort des HErrn redete und sprach: Du sollst Israel heißen),
And Elijah took twelve stones, one for each tribe of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had come and said, “Israel shall be your name.”
und baute mit den Steinen einen Altar im Namen des HErrn und machte um den Altar her eine Grube, zwei Kornmaß weit,
And with the stones, Elijah built an altar in the name of the LORD. Then he dug a trench around the altar large enough to hold two seahs of seed (note: 2 seahs is approximately 13.2 dry quarts or 14.6 liters (probably about 25.4 pounds or 11.5 kilograms of seed).).
und richtete das Holz zu und zerstückte den Farren und legte ihn aufs Holz
Next, he arranged the wood, cut up the bull, placed it on the wood,
und sprach: Holet vier KadEin Kad ist ein Gefäß mit einem Volumen von etwa 2 Litern. Wasser voll und gießet es auf das Brandopfer und aufs Holz! Und sprach: Tut's noch einmal! Und sie taten's noch einmal. Und er sprach: Tut's zum drittenmal! Und sie taten's zum drittenmal.
and said, “Fill four waterpots and pour the water on the offering and on the wood (note: Some texts continue verse 33 to this point.).” “Do it a second time,” he said, and they did it a second time. “Do it a third time,” he said, and they did it a third time.
Und das Wasser lief um den Altar her, und die Grube ward auch voll Wasser.
So the water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.
Und da die Zeit war, Speisopfer zu opfern, trat Elia, der Prophet, herzu und sprach: HErr, Gott Abrahams, Isaaks und Israels, lass heute kund werden, dass du Gott in Israel bist und ich dein Knecht, und dass ich solches alles nach deinem Wort getan habe!
At the time of the evening sacrifice, Elijah the prophet approached the altar and said, “O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and that I am Your servant and have done all these things at Your command.
Erhöre mich HErr, erhöre mich, dass dies Volk wisse, dass du, HErr, Gott bist, dass du ihr Herz darnach bekehrst!
Answer me, O LORD! Answer me, so that this people will know that You, the LORD, are God, and that You have turned their hearts back again.”
Da fiel das Feuer des HErrn herab und fraß Brandopfer, Holz, Steine und Erde und leckte das Wasser auf in der Grube.
Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and the dust, and it licked up the water in the trench.
Da das alles Volk sah, fiel es auf sein Angesicht und sprach: Der HErr ist Gott, der HErr ist Gott!
When all the people saw this, they fell facedown and said, “The LORD, He is God! The LORD, He is God!”
Elia aber sprach zu ihnen: Greift die Propheten Baals, dass ihrer keiner entrinne! und sie griffen sie. Und Elia führte sie hinab an den Bach Kison und schlachtete sie daselbst.
Then Elijah ordered them, “Seize the prophets of Baal! Do not let a single one escape.” So they seized them, and Elijah brought them down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered them there.
Und Elia sprach zu Ahab: Zieh hinauf, iss und trink; denn es rauscht, als wollte es sehr regnen.
And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.”
Und da Ahab hinaufzog, zu essen und zu trinken, ging Elia auf des Karmels Spitze und bückte sich zur Erde und tat sein Haupt zwischen seine Kniee
So Ahab went up to eat and drink. But Elijah climbed to the summit of Carmel, bent down on the ground, and put his face between his knees.
und sprach zu seinem Diener: Geh hinauf und schau zum Meer zu! Er ging hinauf und schaute und sprach: Es ist nichts da. Er sprach: Geh wieder hin siebenmal!
“Go and look toward the sea,” he said to his servant. So the servant went and looked, and he said, “There is nothing there.” Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”
Und beim siebentenmal sprach er: Siehe, es geht eine kleine Wolke auf aus dem Meer wie eines Mannes Hand. Er sprach: Geh hinauf und sage Ahab: Spanne an und fahre hinab, dass dich der Regen nicht ergreife!
On the seventh time the servant reported, “There is a cloud as small as a man’s hand rising from the sea.” And Elijah replied, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’”
Und ehe man zusah, ward der Himmel schwarz von Wolken und Wind, und kam ein großer Regen. Ahab aber fuhr und zog gen Jesreel.
Meanwhile, the sky grew dark with clouds and wind, and a heavy rain began to fall. So Ahab rode away and went to Jezreel.
Und die Hand des HErrn kam über Elia, und er gürtete seine Lenden und lief vor Ahab hin, bis er kam gen Jesreel.
And the hand of the LORD came upon Elijah, and he tucked his cloak into his belt (note: Hebrew he girded up his loins) and ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.
