Καὶ πορεύεται βασιλεὺς Ῥοβοὰμ εἰς Σίκιμα, ὅτι εἰς Σίκιμα ἤρχοντο πᾶς ἰσραὴλ βασιλεῦσαι αὐτόν.
Then Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make him king.
καὶ ἐλάλησεν ὁ λαὸς πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα Ῥοβοὰμ λέγοντες
So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and the whole assembly of Israel came to Rehoboam and said,
Ὁ πατήρ σου ἐβάρυνεν τὸν κλοιὸν ἡμῶν· καὶ σὺ νῦν κούφισον ἀπὸ τῆς δουλείας τοῦ πατρός σου τῆς σκληρᾶς καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ κλοιοῦ αὐτοῦ τοῦ βαρέως οὗ ἔδωκεν ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς, καὶ δουλεύσομέν σοι.
“Your father put a heavy yoke on us. But now you must lighten the burden of your father’s service and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”
καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Ἀπέλθετε ἕως ἡμερῶν τριῶν, καὶ ἀναστρέψατε πρὸς μέ· καὶ ἀπῆλθον.
Rehoboam answered, “Go away for three days and then return to me.” So the people departed.
καὶ παρήγγειλεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τοῖς πρεσβυτέροις, οἳ ἦσαν παρεστῶτες ἐνώπιον Σαλωμὼν τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ ἔτι ζῶντος αὐτοῦ, λέγων Πῶς ὑμεῖς βουλεύεσθε καὶ ἀποκριθῶ τῷ τούτῳ λόγον;
Then King Rehoboam consulted with the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How do you advise me to respond to these people?” he asked.
καὶ ἐλάλησαν πρὸς αὐτὸν λέγοντες Εἰ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ ἔσῃ δοῦλος τῷ λαῷ τούτῳ, καὶ δουλεύσῃς αὐτοῖς καὶ λαλήσῃς αὐτοῖς λόγους ἀγαθούς, καὶ ἔσονταί σοι δοῦλοι πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας.
They replied, “If you will be a servant to these people and serve them this day, and if you will respond by speaking kind words to them, they will be your servants forever.”
καὶ ἐνκατέλιπεν τὴν βουλὴν τῶν πρεσβυτέρων ἃ συνεβουλεύσαντο αὐτῷ, καὶ συνεβουλεύσατο μετὰ τῶν παιδαρίων τῶν ἐκτραφέντων μετ’ αὐτοῦ τῶν παρεστηκότων πρὸ προςώπου αὐτοῦ
But Rehoboam rejected the advice of the elders; instead, he consulted the young men who had grown up with him and served him.
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Τί ὑμεῖς συμβουλεύετε; καὶ τί ἀποκριθῶ τῷ λαῷ τούτῶ τοῖς λέγουσι πρὸς μὲ λεγόντων Κούφισον ἀπὸ τοῦ κλοιοῦ οὗ ἔδωκεν ὁ πατήρ σου ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς;
He asked them, “What message do you advise that we send back to these people who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”
καὶ ἐλάλησαν πρὸς αὐτὸν τὰ παιδάρια τὰ ἐκτραφέντα μετ’ αὐτοῦ, οἱ παρεστηκότες πρὸ προσώπου αὐτοῦ, λέγοντες Τάδε λαλήσεις τῷ λαῷ τούτῳ τοῖς λαλήσασι πρὸς σὲ λέγοντες Ὁ πατήρ σου ἐβάρυνεν τὸν κλοιὸν ἡμῶν, καὶ σὺ νῦν κούφισον ἀφ’ ἡμῶν· τάδε λαλήσεις πρὸς αὐτούς Ἡ μικρότης μου παχυτέρα τῆς ὀσφύος τοῦ πατρός μου.
The young men who had grown up with him replied, “This is how you should answer these people who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you must make it lighter.’ This is what you should tell them: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist!
καὶ νῦν ὁ πατήρ μου ἐπεςάσσετο ὑμᾶς κλοιῷ βαρεῖ, κἀγὼ προσθήσω ἐπὶ τὸν κλοιὸν ὑμῶν· ὁ πατήρ μου ἐπαίδευσεν ὑμᾶς ἐν μάστιγξιν, ἐγὼ δὲ παιδεύσω ὑμᾶς ἐν σκορπίοις.
Whereas my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. Whereas my father scourged you with whips, I will scourge you with scorpions.’”
καὶ παρεγένοντο πᾶς Ἰσραὴλ πρὸς τὸν βασιλὲα Ῥοβοὰμ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ τρίτῃ, καθότι ἐλάλησεν αὐτοῖς ὁ βασιλεὺς λέγων Ἀναστράφητε πρὸς μὲ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ τρίτῃ.
After three days, Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, since the king had said, “Come back to me on the third day.”
καὶ ἀπεκρίθη ὁ βασιλεὺς πρὸς τὸν λαὸν σκληρά, καὶ ἐνκατέλιπεν Ῥοβοὰμ τὴν βουλὴν τῶν πρεσβυτέρων ἃ συνεβουλεύσαντο αὐτῷ,
And the king answered the people harshly. He rejected the advice of the elders
καὶ ἐλάλησεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς κατὰ τὴν βουλὴν τῶν παιδαρίων λέγων Ὁ πατήρ μου ἐβάρυνεν τὸν κλοιὸν ὑμῶν, κἀγὼ προσθήσω ἐπὶ τὸν κλοιὸν ὑμῶν· ὁ πατήρ μου ἐπαίδευσεν ὑμᾶς μάστιγξιν, κἀγὼ παιδεύσω ὑμᾶς ἐν σκορπίοις.
and spoke to them as the young men had advised, saying, “Whereas my father made your yoke heavy, I will add to your yoke. Whereas my father scourged you with whips, I will scourge you with scorpions.”
καὶ οὐκ ἤκουσεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τοῦ λαοῦ, ὅτι ἦν μεταστροφὴ παρὰ Κυρίου, ὅπως στήσῃ τὸ ἡῆμα αὐτοῦ ὃ ἐλάλησεν ἐν χειρὶ Ἀχειὰ τοῦ Σηλωνείτου περὶ Ἰεροβοὰμ οἱοῦ Ναβάτ.
So the king did not listen to the people, and indeed this turn of events was from the LORD, to fulfill the word He had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah the Shilonite.
καὶ εἶδον πᾶς Ἰσραὴλ ὅτι οὐκ ἤκουσεν ὁ βασιλεὺς αὐτῶν·
When all Israel saw that the king had refused to listen to them, they answered the king: “What portion do we have in David, and what inheritance in the son of Jesse? To your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, O David!” So the Israelites went home,
καὶ ἀπεκρίθη ὁ λαὸς τῷ βασιλεῖ λέγων Τίς ἡμῖν μερὶς ἐν Δαυείθ; καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἡμῖν κληρονομία ἐν οἱῷ Ἰεσσαί. ἀπότρεχε, Ἰσραήλ, εἰς τὰ σκηνώματά σου· νῦν βόσκε τὸν οἶκόν σου, Δαυείδ. καὶ ἀπῆλθεν Ἰσραὴλ εἰς τὰ σκηνώματα αὐτοῦ.
but Rehoboam still reigned over the Israelites living in the cities of Judah.
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν ὀ βασιλεὺς τὸν Ἀρὰμ τὸν ἐπὶ τοῦ φόρου, καὶ ἐλιθοβόλησαν αὐτὸν ἐν λίθοις καὶ ἀπέθανεν· καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς Ῥοβοὰμ ἔφθασεν ἀναβῆναι τοῦ φυγεῖν εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ.
Then King Rehoboam sent out Adoram (note: Hebrew; some LXX manuscripts and Syriac Adoniram; see 1 Kings 4:6 and 1 Kings 5:14.), who was in charge of the forced labor, but all Israel stoned him to death. And King Rehoboam mounted his chariot in haste and escaped to Jerusalem.
καὶ ἠθέτησεν Ἰσραὴλ εἰς τὸν οἶκον Δαυεὶδ ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης.
So to this day Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David.
καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἢκουσεν πᾶς Ἰσραὴλ ὅτι ἀνέκαμψεν Ῥοβοάμ, καὶ ἀπέστειλεν καὶ ἐκάλεσεν αὐτὸν εἰς τὴν συναγωγήν, καὶ ἐβασίλευσαν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ Ἰσραήλ. καὶ οὐκ ὀπίσω Δαυεὶδ παρὲξ σκήπτρου Ἰούδα καὶ Βενιαμείν, μόνοι.
When all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they summoned him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. Only the tribe of Judah followed the house of David.
Καὶ Ῥοβοὰμ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ, καὶ ἐξεκλησίασεν τὴν συναγωγὴν Ἰούδα καὶ σκῆπτρον Βεναμείν, ἑκατὸν καὶ εἴκοσι χιλιάδες νεανιῶν ποιούντων πόλεμον, τοῦ πολεμεῖν πρὸς οἶκον Ἰσραήλ, ἐπιστρέψαι τὴν βασιλείαν Ῥοβοὰμ υἱῷ Σαλωών.
And when Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem, he mobilized the whole house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin—180,000 chosen warriors—to fight against the house of Israel and restore the kingdom to Rehoboam son of Solomon.
καὶ ἐγένετο λόγος Κυρίου πρὸς Σαμαίαν ἄνθρωπον τοῦ θεοῦ λέγων
But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God:
Εἰπὸν τῷ Ῥοβοὰμ υἱῷ Σαλωμὼν βασιλεῖ Ἰούδα καὶ πρὸς πάντα οἶκον Ἰούδα καὶ Βενιαμεὶν καὶ τῷ καταλοίπῳ τοῦ λαοῦ λέγων
“Tell Rehoboam son of Solomon king of Judah, all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and the rest of the people
Τάδε λέγει Κύριος Οὐκ ἀναβήσεσθε οὐδὲ πολεμήσετε μετὰ τῶν ἀδελφῶν ὑμῶν υἰῶν Ἰσραήλ· ἀποστρεφέτω ἕκαστος εἰς τὸν οἶκον ἐαυτοῦ, ὅτι παρ’ ἐμοῦ γέγονεν τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο. καὶ ἤκουσαν τοῦ λόγου Κυρίου, καὶ κατέπαυσαν τοῦ πορευθῆναι κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμα Κυρίου.
that this is what the LORD says: ‘You are not to go up and fight against your brothers, the Israelites. Each of you must return home, for this is My doing.’” So they listened to the word of the LORD and turned back according to the word of the LORD.
Καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν Ἰεροβοὰμ τὴν Σίκιμα τὴν ἐν ὂρει Ἐφράιμ, καὶ κατῴκει ἐν αὐτῷῇ· καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἐκεῖθεν καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν τὴν φανουήλ.
Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there. And from there he went out and built Penuel (note: Penuel is a variant of Peniel; see Genesis 32:30.).
καὶ εἶπεν Ἰεροβοὰμ ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ Ἰδοὺ νῦν ἐπιστρέψει ἡ βασιλεία ἐν οἲκῳ Δαυείδ·
Jeroboam said in his heart, “Now the kingdom might revert to the house of David.
ἐὰν ἐναβῇ ὁ λαὸς οὗτος ἀναφέρειν θνςίαν ἐν οἲκῳ Κυρίου εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ, καὶ ἐπιστραφήσεται καρδία τοῦ λαοῦ πρὸς Κύριον καὶ κύριον αὐτῶν, πρὸς Ῥοβοὰμ βασιλέα Ἰούδα, καὶ ἀποκτενοῦσίν με.
If these people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, their hearts will return to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah; then they will kill me and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.”
καὶ ἐβουλεύσατο ὁ βασιλεύς, καὶ ἐπορεύθη καὶ ἐποίησεν δύο δαμάλις χρυςᾶς, καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν λαόν Ἱκανούσθω ὐμῖν ἀναβαίνειν εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ· ἰδοὺ θεοί σου, Ἰσραήλ, οἱ ἀναγαγόντες σε ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου.
After seeking advice, the king made two golden calves and said to the people (note: Hebrew to them), “Going up to Jerusalem is too much for you. Here, O Israel, are your gods, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.”
καὶ ἔθετο τὴν μίαν εἰς Βαιθήλ, καὶ τὴν μίαν ἔδωκεν ἐν Δάν.
One calf he set up in Bethel, and the other in Dan.
καὶ ἐγένετο ὁ λόηος οὖτος εἰς ἁμαρτίαν· τὴν ἐπορεύετο ὁ λαὸς πρὸ προςώπου τῆς μιᾶς ἕως Δάν.
And this thing became a sin; the people walked as far as Dan to worship before one of the calves.
καὶ ἐποίησεν οἴκους ἐφ’ ὑψηλῶν, καὶ ἐποίησεν ἱερεῖς μέρος τι ἐκ τοῦ λαοῦ οἳ οὐκ ἦσαν ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν Λευεί.
Jeroboam also built shrines on the high places and appointed from every class of people priests who were not Levites.
καὶ ἐποίησεν Ἰεροβοὰμ ἑορτὴν ἐν τῷ μηνὶ τῷ ὀγδόῳ ἐν τῇ πεντεκαιδεκάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ τοῦ μηνὸς κατὰ τὴν ἑορτὴν τὴν ἐν γῇ Ἰούδα, καὶ ἀνέβη ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον ὃ ἐποίησεν ἐν Βαιθὴλ τοῦ θύειν ταῖς δαμάλεσιν αἶς ἐποίησεν, καὶ παρέστησεν ἐν Βαιθὴλ τοὺς ἱερεῖς τῶν ὑψηλῶν ὦν ἐποίησεν.
And Jeroboam ordained a feast on the fifteenth day of the eighth month (note: This feast was exactly one month after the annual Feast of Tabernacles in Judah; see Leviticus 23:34.), like the feast that was in Judah, and he offered sacrifices on the altar; he made this offering in Bethel to sacrifice to the calves he had set up, and he installed priests in Bethel for the high places he had set up.
καὶ ἀνέβη ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον ὃ ἐποίησεν τῇ πεντεκαιδεκάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἐν τῷ μηνὶ τῷ ὀγδόῳ, ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ ᾖ ἐπλάσατο ἀπὸ καρδίας αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐποίησεν ἑορτὴν τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰσραήλ. καὶ ἀνέβη ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον τοῦ ἐπιθῦσαι.
On the fifteenth day of the eighth month, a month of his own choosing, Jeroboam offered sacrifices on the altar he had set up in Bethel. So he ordained a feast for the Israelites, offered sacrifices on the altar, and burned incense.
