Καὶ ἔστη διάβολος ἐν τῷ Ἰσραήλ, καὶ ἐπέσεισεν τὸν Δαυεὶδ τοῦ ἀριθμῆσαι τὸν Ἰσραήλ.
Then Satan (note: That is, the Accuser or the Adversary) rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel.
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Δαυεὶδ πρὸς Ἰωὰβ καὶ πρὸς τοὺς ἄρχοντας τῆς δυνάμεως Πορεύθητε δὴ ἀριθμήσατε τὸν Ἰσραὴλ ἀπὸ Βηρσαβεέ καὶ ἕως Δάν, καὶ ἐνέγκατε πρὸς μέ, καὶ γνώσομαι τὸν ἀριθμὸν αὐτῶν.
So David said to Joab and the commanders of the troops, “Go and count the Israelites from Beersheba to Dan and bring me a report, so that I may know their number.”
καὶ εἶπεν Ἰωάβ Προσθείη Κύριος ἐπὶ τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ ὡς αὐτοὶ ἑκατονταπλασίως, καὶ οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ κυρίου μου τοῦ βασιλέως βλέποντες· πάντες τῷ κυρίῳ μου παῖδες· ἴνα τί ζητεῖ κύριός μου τοῦτο; ἵνα μὴ γένηται εἰς ἁμαρτίαν τῷ Ἰσραήλ.
But Joab replied, “May the LORD multiply His troops a hundred times over. My lord the king, are they not all servants of my lord? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?”
καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ.
Nevertheless, the king’s word prevailed against Joab. So Joab departed and traveled throughout Israel, and then he returned to Jerusalem.
καὶ ἔδωκεν Ἰωὰβ τὸν ἀριθμὸν τῆς ἐπισκέψεως τοῦ λαοῦ τῷ Δαυείδ· καὶ ἦν πᾶς Ἰσραὴλ χίλιαι χιλιάδες καὶ ἑκατὸν χιλιάδες ἀνδρῶν ἐσπασμένων μάχαιραν.
And Joab reported to David the total number of the troops. In all Israel there were 1,100,000 men who drew the sword, including 470,000 in Judah.
καὶ τὸν Λευεὶ καὶ τὸν Βενιαμεὶν οὐκ ἠρίθμησεν ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῶν, ὅτι κατίσχυσεν λόγος τοῦ βασιλέως τὸν Ἰωάβ.
But Joab did not include Levi and Benjamin in the count, because the king’s command was detestable to him.
καὶ πονηρὸν ἐναντίον τοῦ θεοῦ περὶ τοῦ πράγματος τούτου, καὶ ἐπάταξεν τὸν Ἰσραήλ.
This command was also evil in the sight of God; so He struck Israel.
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς τὸν θεόν Ἡμάρτηκα σφόδρα ὅτι ἐποίησα τὸ πρᾶγμα τοῦτο· καὶ νῦν περίελε δὴ τὴν κακίαν παιδός σου, ὅτι ἐματαιώθην σφόδρα.
Then David said to God, “I have sinned greatly because I have done this thing. Now I beg You to take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.”
Πορεύου καὶ λάλησον πρὸς Δαυεὶδ λέγων Οὕτως λέγει Κύριος Τρία αἴρω ἐγὼ ἐπὶ σέ· ἔκλεξαι σεαυτῷ ἔν ἐξ αὐτῶν καὶ ποιήσω σοι.
“Go and tell David that this is what the LORD says: ‘I am offering you three options. Choose one of them, and I will carry it out against you.’”
καὶ ἦλθεν Γὰδ πρὸς Δαυεὶδ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Οὕτως λέγει Κύριος Εκλεξαι σεαυτῷ
So Gad went and said to David, “This is what the LORD says: ‘You must choose
ἦ τρία ἔτη λιμοῦ, ἦ τρεῖς μῆνας φεύγειν σε ἐκ προσώπου ἐχθρῶν σου, καὶ μάχαιρα ἐξ ἐχθρῶν σου τοῦ ἐξολεθρεῦσαι, ἦ τρεῖς ἡμέρας όομφαίαν Κυρίου καὶ θάνατον ἐν τῇ γῇ, καὶ ἄγγελος Κυρίου ἐξολεθρεύων ἐν πάσῃ κληρονομίᾳ Ἰσραήλ· καὶ νῦν ἴδε τί ἀποκριθῶ τῷ ἀποστείλαντι λόγον.
between three years of famine, three months of being swept away (note: Hebrew; LXX and Vulgate of fleeing; see 2 Samuel 24:13.) before your enemies and overtaken by their swords, or three days of the sword of the LORD—days of plague upon the land, with the angel of the LORD ravaging every part of Israel.’ Now then, decide how I should reply to Him who sent me.”
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς Γάδ Στενά μοι καὶ τὰ τρία σφόδρα· ἐμπεσοῦμαι δὴ εἰς χεῖρας Κυρίου, ὅτι πολλοὶ οἱ οἰκτειρμοὶ αὐτοῦ σφόδρα, καὶ εἰς χεῖρας ἀνθρώπων οὐ μὴ ἐμπέσω.
David answered Gad, “I am deeply distressed. Please, let me fall into the hand of the LORD, for His mercies are very great; but do not let me fall into the hands of men.”
καὶ ἔδωκεν Κύριος θάνατον ἐν Ἰσραήλ, καὶ ἔπεσον ἐξ Ἰσραὴλ ἑβδομήκοντα χιλιάδες ἀνδρῶν.
So the LORD sent a plague upon Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell dead.
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν ὁ θεὸς ἄγγελον εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ τοῦ ἐξολεθρεῦσαι αὐτὴν· καὶ ὡς ἐξολόθρευεν, εἶδεν Κύριος καὶ μετεμελήθη ἐπὶ τῇ κακίᾳ, καὶ εἶπεν τῷ ἀγγέλῳ τῷ ἐξολοθρεύοντι Ἱκανούσθω σοι, ἄνες τὴν χεῖρά σου· καὶ ὁ ἅγγελος Κυρίου ἑστὼς ἐν τῷ ἄλῳ Φρνὰ τοῦ Ἰεβουσαίου.
Then God sent an angel to destroy Jerusalem, but as the angel was doing so, the LORD saw it and relented from the calamity, and He said to the angel who was destroying the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand now!” At that time the angel of the LORD was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan (note: Ornan is a variant of Araunah; also in verses 18–28; see 2 Samuel 24:16.) the Jebusite.
καὶ ἐπῆρεν Δαυεὶδ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶδεν τὸν ἄγγελον Κυρίου ἑστῶτα ἀνὰ μέσον τῆς γῆς καὶ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ, καὶ ἡ όομφαία αὐτοῦ ἐσπασμένη ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ, ἐκτεταμένη ἐπὶ Ἰερουσαλήμ· καὶ ἔπεσεν Δαυεὶδ καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι περιβεβλημένοι ἐν σάκκοις ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτῶν.
When David lifted up his eyes and saw the angel of the LORD standing between heaven and earth, with a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem, David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell facedown.
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς τὸν θεόν Οὐκ ἐγὼ εἶπα τοῦ ἀριθμῆσαι τῷ λαῷ καὶ ἐγὼ εἰμι ὁ ἁμαρταών, κακοποιῶν ἐκακοποίησα· καὶ ταῦτα τὰ πρόβατα τί ἐποίησαν ; Κύριε ὁ θεός, γενηθήτω ἡ χείρ σου ἐν ἐμοὶ καὶ ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ τοῦ πατρός μου, καὶ μὴ ἐν τῷ λαῷ σου εἰς ἀπώλειαν, Κύριε.
And David said to God, “Was it not I (note: Or I, the shepherd, see 2 Samuel 24:17 DSS and LXX.) who gave the order to count the people? I am the one who has sinned and acted wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? O LORD my God, please let Your hand fall upon me and my father’s house, but do not let this plague remain upon Your people.”
καὶ ἄγγελος Κυρίου εἶπεν τῷ Γὰδ τοῦ εἰπεῖν πρὸς Δαυεὶδ ἵνα ἀναβῇ τοῦ στῆσαι θυσιαστήριον τῷ κυρίῳ ἐν ἄλῳ Ορνὰ τοῦ Ἰεβουσαίου.
Then the angel of the LORD ordered Gad to tell David to go up and build an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
καὶ ἀνέβη Δαυεὶδ κατὰ τὸν λόγον Γὰδ ὸν ἐλάλησεν ἐν ὀνόματι Κυρίου.
So David went up at the word that Gad had spoken in the name of the LORD.
καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν Ορνά, καὶ εἶδεν τὸν βασιλέα καὶ τέσσαρας υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ μετʼ αὐτοῦ μεθαχαβείν· καὶ Ορνὰ ἦν ἀλοῶν πυρούς.
Now Ornan was threshing wheat when he turned and saw the angel; and his four sons who were with him hid themselves.
καὶ ἥλθεν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς Ορνᾶν, καὶ Ορνὰ ἐξῆλθεν ἐκ τῆς ἄλω καὶ προσεκύνησεν τῷ Δαυεὶδ τῷ προσώπῳ ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν.
David came to Ornan, and when Ornan looked out and saw David, he left the threshing floor and bowed facedown before David.
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυεὶδ πρὸς Ορνά Δός μοι τὸν τόπον σου τῆς ἄλω καὶ οἰκοδομήσω ἐπʼ αὐτῷ θυσιαστήριον τῷ κυρίῳ· ἐν ἀργυρίῳ ἀξίῳ δός μοι αὐτόν, καὶ παύσεται ἡ πληγὴ ἐκ τοῦ λαοῦ.
Then David said to Ornan, “Grant me the site of this threshing floor, that I may build an altar to the LORD. Sell it to me for the full price, so that the plague upon the people may be halted.”
καὶ εἶπεν Ορνὰ πρὸς Δαυείδ Λάβε σεαυτῷ, καὶ ποιησάτω ὁ κύριός μου ὁ βασιλεὺς τὸ ἀγαθὸν ἐναντίον αὐτοῦδ δέδωκα τοὺς μόσχους εἰς ὁλοκαύτωσιν καὶ τὸ ἄροτρον εἰς ξύλα καὶ τὸν σῖτον εἰς θυσίαν, τὰ πάντα δέδωκα.
Ornan said to David, “Take it! May my lord the king do whatever seems good to him. Look, I will give the oxen for the burnt offerings, the threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the grain offering—I will give it all.”
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Δαυεὶδ τῷ Ορνά Οὐχί, ὅτι ἀγοράζων ἀγοράζω ἐν ἀργυρίῳ ἀξίῳ· ὅτι οὐ μὴ λάβω ἅ ἐστἶν σοι Κυρίῳ, τοῦ ἀνενέγκαι ὁλοκαύτωσιν δωρεὰν Κυρίῳ.
“No,” replied King David, “I insist on paying the full price, for I will not take for the LORD what belongs to you, nor will I offer burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”
καὶ ἔδωκεν Δαυεὶδ τῷ ρνὰ ἐν τῷ τόπῳ αὐτοῦ σίκλους χρυσίου ὁλκῆς ἑξακοσίους.
So David paid Ornan six hundred shekels of gold (note: 600 shekels is approximately 15.1 pounds or 6.8 kilograms of gold.) for the site.
καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν Δαυεὶδ ἐκεῖ θυσιαστήριον Κυρίῳ, καὶ ἀνήνεγκεν ὁλοκαυτώματα καὶ σωτηρίου· καὶ ἐβόησεν πρὸς Κύριον, καὶ ἐπήκουσεν αὐτῷ ἐν πυρὶ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον τῆς ὁλοκαυτώσεαως καὶ κατανάλωσεν τὴν ὁλοκαύτωσιν.
And there he built an altar to the LORD and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. He called upon the LORD, who answered him with fire from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.
καὶ εἶπεν Κύριος πρὸς τὸν ἄγγελον, καὶ κατέθηκεν τὴν όομφαίαν εἰς τὸν κολεόν.
Then the LORD spoke to the angel, who put his sword back into its sheath.
Ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ ἐν τῷ ἰδεῖν τὸν Δαυεὶδ ὅτι ἐπήκουσεν αὐτῷ ἐν τῷ ἄλῳ ρνὰ τοῦ Ἰεβουσαίου, καὶ ἐθυσίασεν ἐκεῖ
At that time, when David saw that the LORD had answered him at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, he offered sacrifices there.
καὶ σκηνὴ Κυρίου ἣν ἐποίησεν Μωυσῆς ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ καὶ θυσιαστήριον τῶν ὁλοκαυτωμάτων ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ ἐν Βαμὼθ ἐν Γαβαών.
For the tabernacle of the LORD that Moses had made in the wilderness and the altar of burnt offering were presently at the high place in Gibeon,
καὶ οὐκ ἠδύνατο Δαυεὶδ τοῦ πορευθῆναι ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ τοῦ ζητῆσαι τὸν θεόν, ὅτι οὐ κατέσπευσεν ἀπὸ προσώπου τῆς όομφαίας ἀγγέλου Κυρίου.
but David could not go before it to inquire of God, because he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the LORD.
