καὶ ἦλθεν πᾶς Ισραηλ πρὸς Δαυιδ ἐν Χεβρων λέγοντες ἰδοὺ ὀστᾶ σου καὶ σάρκες σου ἡμεῖς
Then all Israel came together to David at Hebron and said, “Here we are, your own flesh and blood.
καὶ ἐχθὲς καὶ τρίτην ὄντος Σαουλ βασιλέως σὺ ἦσθα ὁ ἐξάγων καὶ εἰσάγων τὸν Ισραηλ καὶ εἶπεν κύριος ὁ θεός σού σοι σὺ ποιμανεῖς τὸν λαόν μου τὸν Ισραηλ καὶ σὺ ἔσῃ εἰς ἡγούμενον ἐπὶ Ισραηλ
Even in times past (note: Or For some time), while Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel out and brought them back. And the LORD your God said, ‘You will shepherd My people Israel, and you will be ruler over them.’”
καὶ ἦλθον πάντες πρεσβύτεροι Ισραηλ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα εἰς Χεβρων καὶ διέθετο αὐτοῖς ὁ βασιλεὺς Δαυιδ διαθήκην ἐν Χεβρων ἐναντίον κυρίου καὶ ἔχρισαν τὸν Δαυιδ εἰς βασιλέα ἐπὶ Ισραηλ κατὰ τὸν λόγον κυρίου διὰ χειρὸς Σαμουηλ
So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, where David made a covenant with them before the LORD. And they anointed him king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD through Samuel.
καὶ ἐπορεύθη ὁ βασιλεὺς καὶ ἄνδρες Ισραηλ εἰς Ιερουσαλημ αὕτη Ιεβους καὶ ἐκεῖ οἱ Ιεβουσαῖοι οἱ κατοικοῦντες τὴν γῆν
Then David and all the Israelites marched to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus), where the Jebusites inhabited the land.
εἶπαν δὲ οἱ κατοικοῦντες Ιεβους τῷ Δαυιδ οὐκ εἰσελεύσῃ ὧδε καὶ προκατελάβετο τὴν περιοχὴν Σιων αὕτη ἡ πόλις Δαυιδ
The people of Jebus said to David, “You will never get in here.” Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion (that is, the City of David).
καὶ εἶπεν Δαυιδ πᾶς τύπτων Ιεβουσαῖον ἐν πρώτοις καὶ ἔσται εἰς ἄρχοντα καὶ εἰς στρατηγόν καὶ ἀνέβη ἐπ᾿ αὐτὴν ἐν πρώτοις Ιωαβ υἱὸς Σαρουια καὶ ἐγένετο εἰς ἄρχοντα
Now David had said, “Whoever is the first to strike down a Jebusite will become chief commander.” And Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, and he became the chief.
καὶ ἐκάθισεν Δαυιδ ἐν τῇ περιοχῇ διὰ τοῦτο ἐκάλεσεν αὐτὴν πόλιν Δαυιδ
So David took up residence in the fortress; that is why it was called the City of David.
καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν τὴν πόλιν κύκλῳ καὶ ἐπολέμησεν καὶ ἔλαβεν τὴν πόλιν
He built up the city around it, from the supporting terraces (note: Hebrew the Millo) to the surrounding wall, while Joab restored the rest of the city.
καὶ ἐπορεύετο Δαυιδ πορευόμενος καὶ μεγαλυνόμενος καὶ κύριος παντοκράτωρ μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ
And David became greater and greater, for the LORD of Hosts was with him.
καὶ οὗτοι οἱ ἄρχοντες τῶν δυνατῶν οἳ ἦσαν τῷ Δαυιδ οἱ κατισχύοντες μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ αὐτοῦ μετὰ παντὸς Ισραηλ τοῦ βασιλεῦσαι αὐτὸν κατὰ τὸν λόγον κυρίου ἐπὶ Ισραηλ
Now these were the chiefs of David’s mighty men, who, together with all Israel, bolstered and strengthened his kingdom, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.
καὶ οὗτος ὁ ἀριθμὸς τῶν δυνατῶν τοῦ Δαυιδ Ιεσεβααλ υἱὸς Αχαμανι πρῶτος τῶν τριάκοντα οὗτος ἐσπάσατο τὴν ῥομφαίαν αὐτοῦ ἅπαξ ἐπὶ τριακοσίους τραυματίας ἐν καιρῷ ἑνί
This is the list of David’s mighty men: Jashobeam son of Hachmoni was chief of the officers (note: Or of the Thirty; some LXX manuscripts of the Three; see 2 Samuel 23:8.); he wielded his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed at one time.
καὶ μετ᾿ αὐτὸν Ελεαζαρ υἱὸς Δωδαι ὁ Αχωχι οὗτος ἦν ἐν τοῖς τρισὶν δυνατοῖς
Next in command was Eleazar son of Dodo (note: Dodo is a variant of Dodai; see 1 Chronicles 27:4.) the Ahohite, one of the three mighty men.
οὗτος ἦν μετὰ Δαυιδ ἐν Φασοδομιν καὶ οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι συνήχθησαν ἐκεῖ εἰς πόλεμον καὶ ἦν μερὶς τοῦ ἀγροῦ πλήρης κριθῶν καὶ ὁ λαὸς ἔφυγεν ἀπὸ προσώπου ἀλλοφύλων
He was with David at Pas-dammim when the Philistines gathered there for battle. At a place with a field full of barley, the troops fled from the Philistines.
καὶ ἔστη ἐν μέσῳ τῆς μερίδος καὶ ἔσωσεν αὐτὴν καὶ ἐπάταξεν τοὺς ἀλλοφύλους καὶ ἐποίησεν κύριος σωτηρίαν μεγάλην
But Eleazar and David stationed themselves (note: Literally But they stationed themselves) in the middle of the field and defended it. They struck down the Philistines, and the LORD brought about a great victory.
καὶ κατέβησαν τρεῖς ἐκ τῶν τριάκοντα ἀρχόντων εἰς τὴν πέτραν πρὸς Δαυιδ εἰς τὸ σπήλαιον Οδολλαμ καὶ παρεμβολὴ τῶν ἀλλοφύλων παρεμβεβλήκει ἐν τῇ κοιλάδι τῶν γιγάντων
Three of the thirty chief men went down to David, to the rock at the cave of Adullam, while a company of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim.
καὶ Δαυιδ τότε ἐν τῇ περιοχῇ καὶ τὸ σύστεμα τῶν ἀλλοφύλων τότε ἐν Βαιθλεεμ
At that time David was in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was at Bethlehem.
καὶ ἐπεθύμησεν Δαυιδ καὶ εἶπεν τίς ποτιεῖ με ὕδωρ ἐκ τοῦ λάκκου Βαιθλεεμ τοῦ ἐν τῇ πύλῃ
David longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!”
καὶ διέρρηξαν οἱ τρεῖς τὴν παρεμβολὴν τῶν ἀλλοφύλων καὶ ὑδρεύσαντο ὕδωρ ἐκ τοῦ λάκκου τοῦ ἐν Βαιθλεεμ ὃς ἦν ἐν τῇ πύλῃ καὶ ἔλαβον καὶ ἦλθον πρὸς Δαυιδ καὶ οὐκ ἠθέλησεν Δαυιδ τοῦ πιεῖν αὐτὸ καὶ ἔσπεισεν αὐτὸ τῷ κυρίῳ
So the Three broke through the Philistine camp, drew water from the well at the gate of Bethlehem, and brought it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the LORD,
καὶ εἶπεν ἵλεώς μοι ὁ θεὸς τοῦ ποιῆσαι τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο εἰ αἷμα ἀνδρῶν τούτων πίομαι ἐν ψυχαῖς αὐτῶν ὅτι ἐν ψυχαῖς αὐτῶν ἤνεγκαν αὐτό καὶ οὐκ ἐβούλετο πιεῖν αὐτό ταῦτα ἐποίησαν οἱ τρεῖς δυνατοί
saying, “Far be it from me, my God, to do this! How can I drink the blood of these men who risked their lives?” Because they had brought it at the risk of their lives, David refused to drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty men.
καὶ Αβεσσα ἀδελφὸς Ιωαβ οὗτος ἦν ἄρχων τῶν τριῶν οὗτος ἐσπάσατο τὴν ῥομφαίαν αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τριακοσίους τραυματίας ἐν καιρῷ ἑνί καὶ οὗτος ἦν ὀνομαστὸς ἐν τοῖς τρισίν
Now Abishai, the brother of Joab, was chief of the Three (note: Hebrew; Syriac the Thirty; also in verse 21), and he wielded his spear against three hundred men, killed them, and won a name along with the Three.
ἀπὸ τῶν τριῶν ὑπὲρ τοὺς δύο ἔνδοξος καὶ ἦν αὐτοῖς εἰς ἄρχοντα καὶ ἕως τῶν τριῶν οὐκ ἤρχετο
He was doubly honored above the Three, and he became their commander, even though he was not included among the Three.
καὶ Βαναιας υἱὸς Ιωδαε υἱὸς ἀνδρὸς δυνατοῦ πολλὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ ὑπὲρ Καβασαηλ οὗτος ἐπάταξεν τοὺς δύο αριηλ Μωαβ καὶ οὗτος κατέβη καὶ ἐπάταξεν τὸν λέοντα ἐν τῷ λάκκῳ ἐν ἡμέρᾳ χιόνος
And Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a man of valor from Kabzeel, a man of many exploits. He struck down two champions of Moab (note: Or two sons of Ariel of Moab), and on a snowy day he went down into a pit and killed a lion.
καὶ οὗτος ἐπάταξεν τὸν ἄνδρα τὸν Αἰγύπτιον ἄνδρα ὁρατὸν πεντάπηχυν καὶ ἐν χειρὶ τοῦ Αἰγυπτίου δόρυ ὡς ἀντίον ὑφαινόντων καὶ κατέβη ἐπ᾿ αὐτὸν Βαναιας ἐν ῥάβδῳ καὶ ἀφείλατο ἐκ τῆς χειρὸς τοῦ Αἰγυπτίου τὸ δόρυ καὶ ἀπέκτεινεν αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ δόρατι αὐτοῦ
He also struck down an Egyptian, a huge man five cubits tall. Although the Egyptian had a spear like a weaver’s beam in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club, snatched the spear from his hand, and killed the Egyptian with his own spear.
ταῦτα ἐποίησεν Βαναιας υἱὸς Ιωδαε καὶ τούτῳ ὄνομα ἐν τοῖς τρισὶν τοῖς δυνατοῖς
These were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada, who won a name along with the three mighty men.
ὑπὲρ τοὺς τριάκοντα ἔνδοξος οὗτος καὶ πρὸς τοὺς τρεῖς οὐκ ἤρχετο καὶ κατέστησεν αὐτὸν Δαυιδ ἐπὶ τὴν πατριὰν αὐτοῦ
He was most honored among the Thirty, but he did not become one of the Three. And David appointed him over his guard.
καὶ δυνατοὶ τῶν δυνάμεων Ασαηλ ἀδελφὸς Ιωαβ Ελεαναν υἱὸς Δωδω ἐκ Βαιθλαεμ
Now these were the mighty men: Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan son of Dodo of Bethlehem,
Σαμμωθ ὁ Αδι Χελλης ὁ Φελωνι
Shammoth the Harorite (note: Shammoth the Harorite is a variant of Shammah the Harodite; see 2 Samuel 23:25.), Helez the Pelonite,
Ωραι υἱὸς Εκκης ὁ Θεκωι Αβιεζερ ὁ Αναθωθι
Ira son of Ikkesh the Tekoite, Abiezer the Anathothite,
Μοοραι ὁ Νετωφαθι Χολοδ υἱὸς Νοοζα ὁ Νετωφαθι
Maharai the Netophathite, Heled son of Baanah the Netophathite,
Αιθι υἱὸς Ριβαι ἐκ βουνοῦ Βενιαμιν Βαναιας ὁ Φαραθωνι
Ithai (note: Ithai is a variant of Ittai; see 2 Samuel 23:29.) son of Ribai from Gibeah of the Benjamites, Benaiah the Pirathonite,
Ουρι ἐκ Ναχαλιγαας Αβιηλ ὁ Γαραβεθθι
Hurai (note: Hurai is a variant of Hiddai; see 2 Samuel 23:30.) from the brooks (note: Or from the ravines) of Gaash, Abiel (note: Abiel is a variant of Abi-albon; see 2 Samuel 23:31.) the Arbathite,
Αζμωθ ὁ Βεερμι Ελιαβα ὁ Σαλαβωνι
Azmaveth the Baharumite (note: Baharumite is a variant of Barhumite; see 2 Samuel 23:31.), Eliahba the Shaalbonite,
Βενναιας Οσομ ὁ Γεννουνι Ιωναθαν υἱὸς Σωλα ὁ Αραρι
the sons of Hashem (note: Hashem is a variant of Jashen; see LXX and 2 Samuel 23:32.) the Gizonite, Jonathan son of Shagee the Hararite,
Αχιμ υἱὸς Σαχαρ ὁ Αραρι Ελφαλ υἱὸς Ουρ
Ahiam son of Sachar (note: Sachar is a variant of Sharar; see 2 Samuel 23:33.) the Hararite, Eliphal son of Ur,
Σεληκ ὁ Αμμωνι Ναχωρ ὁ Βερθι αἴρων σκεύη Ιωαβ υἱοῦ Σαρουια
Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Beerothite, the armor-bearer of Joab son of Zeruiah,
Αδινα υἱὸς Σαιζα τοῦ Ρουβην ἄρχων καὶ ἐπ᾿ αὐτῷ τριάκοντα
Adina son of Shiza the Reubenite, chief of the Reubenites, and the thirty with him,
Οζια ὁ Ασταρωθι Σαμμα καὶ Ιιηλ υἱοὶ Χωθαν τοῦ Αραρι
Uzzia the Ashterathite, Shama and Jeiel the sons of Hotham the Aroerite,
Ιεδιηλ υἱὸς Σαμερι καὶ Ιωαζαε ὁ ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ ὁ Ιεασι
Jediael son of Shimri and his brother Joha the Tizite,
Ελιηλ ὁ Μιι καὶ Ιαριβι καὶ Ιωσια υἱὸς αὐτοῦ Ελνααμ καὶ Ιεθεμα ὁ Μωαβίτης
Eliel the Mahavite, Jeribai and Joshaviah, the sons of Elnaam, Ithmah the Moabite,
